About Derick Lee's Cancer Treatment Fund

This ribbon was created by Amy Conklin on April 19, 2012

Derick Lee is 31 years old and lives in East Hartford, CT. His daughter Victoria was born in January of this year and in March of this year he married his wife Karen and became a Step-Father to Karen's daughter Mariah. He has worked his entire life and love's his job at Safe Side Chimney as a chimney tech.
In December of 2011 his leg began aching. He brushed it off and went about his normal routine until March of 2012, when he over extended his leg coming off a ladder at work. The pain was unbearable and he went to a walk-in clinic to have it checked. The clinic ordered an MRI and when the results came in Derick received a phone call requesting further testing. One day later they called him back and reported that they had found a large mass/tumor growing in his leg.
He had been referred to a special bone and tissue doctor at UCONN Medical Center. It was there that he underwent a biopsy and the diagnosis of cancer was given. The doctor believed it was a bone cancer but needed pathology to send the sample out of the country to be looked at because of the rarity.
Since the surgery Derick has been heavily sedated to make him comfortable, he is bed ridden and unable to walk on his leg.
After two weeks of not knowing what type of cancer they were facing, they were sent to Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA for further testing. They haven't received many answers but they think he has lymphoma large b-cell cancer. They said success rate depends on treatment. Currently they give him a 50% chance of beating it. The doctor ordered a few more tests and Derick should receive the results shortly. Hopefully this will lead us to the right combination of chemotherapy and radiation.

UPDATE: Quote from Derick on 4/22/12- The pain through the night was the most intense thus far,I think I'll be the only person in New England praying this much needed rain never happens again. Everytime my heart beats it throbs inside my femur as if it was being broken. With no relief from the morphine or oxys anymore. Please let me get some sleep today, It's sooo needed !!!!

UPDATE: Quote from Derick 4/23/12- My adventure today was giving a bone marrow sample, It's another thing I don't wish on anybody. It was a needle as big as the inside of a pen that they pushed through my hip bone, and sucked out bone stuff. She had to bang on the back of the needle to get it to break through bone :-(

UPDATE: Quote from Derick 4/25/2012-Tomorrow I have the surgery to install a port into a main artery just below my heart. This is going to make the chemotherapy hook UPS much easier since it will be a few times a week. They will remove this in about 5-6 months. Just another step in this journey of hell, which I wish upon no one on this earth......Please God, Bring my life back to normal, If not for me please do it for my family......

UPDATE: Quote from Derick on 4/30/2012- It felt so good buying baby formula today knowing we can still cover our rent for the month. This was only achieved because of our loved ones who thought about us before themselves, which 100% brings a tear to my eye. I'm praying if I need the full 6 months of chemotherapy, God gives me enough strength to work at the end.......

UPDATE: Quote from Derek on 5/3/2012- Well im sitting here in my little recliner watching the toxic retuxin drip ever so slowly into my veins. Hoping at the other end it is kicking the shit out of the cancer that is destroying the inside of my body

UPDATE: Quote from Derick on 5/8/2012- Wow, that round of chemotherapy really did a number on me. I've never before in my life, been so deathly ill. It's so hard to believe that with thousands upon thousands of people that fight everyday for their lives against this disease all we have is poison. This is something I wish upon no one. hopefully this next round is not as brutal, another 5 months of this, I don't see how I'll ever recover from treatment alone. Well hopefully I still have people praying for me, lord knows I still am, not only for myself but for everyone else that has to go through this as well.......GOD THANK YOU FOR MY LIFE, FOR I AM THANKFUL TO STILL HAVE IT......

UPDATE- Quote from Derick on 5/27/12- Still very sick today, but I do feel improvement. Unfortunately only chicken broth and watermelon are staying down :-( I would love to fire up my grill... I hope everyone is enjoying and being safe on their holiday weekend. Next year is gonna be a Blast, I will be going all out......

UPDATE- Karen was laid off from work today and Derick is still unable to work. Any donation will help and would be greatly appreciated. Nothing like being kicked when you are down.
