This is Nick's Mom.
Please help Nicky with a financial donation.
Here is the recent updates on his health:
Nick has been undergoing cancer treatment, chemotherapy and radiation. As of this date (12/10/16) Nick has about 19 days left of radiation and chemotherapy, together. Then he will receive just chemotherapy for a few months.
This is his second time receiving cancer treatment. After Nick's first diagnosis, 3 years ago, he was cancer free or NED ( no evidence of disease), until 2 months ago when an MRI showed 2 new tumors.
This time around it is a lot more difficult. The treatment has a stronger affect, leaving Nick feeling very weak, and sick. The treatment is affecting his appetite, his eye sight, his ability to even walk except for short distances around the house. There are more symptoms such as, not being able to taste food. I don't have to tell anyone how it might feel to be weakened in so many ways, and to have the few simple, basic joys such as enjoying a favorite food taken away. As minor as this might seem, no one would even begin to imagine what this would be like along with the other basic functions we take for granted, like being able to see the written lines in a book clearly, due to blurred vision. What's worse, the isolation Nick has had to endure because these symptoms have him home bound and the anxiety and fear and feelings of not having the ability to communicate, or worse- just the ability to smile- keep him from reaching out to friends. He struggles every day to preserve his dignity.
There is so much more that Nick is enduring while he battles this terrible disease. As his mom, I am constantly there for him.
I never lose hope. Even when Nick is afraid and is unable to see or feel hope, I see it. When Nick doesn't feel he can get through this, I Know he can. When he feels weak, I am his strength.
There have been so many good people supporting Nick, along the way for these passed three years. They give him love, motivation, prayers. Many friends and family have donated.
We ask for donations because I am retired and on a fixed income.
Nick had to leave his job as a special ed. teacher when his symptoms worsened. We need donations to pay for expenses such as gas and food. When Nick became sick, I had to leave my job to help him.
When Nick was working, he paid rent and basics, which his reduced disability income can no longer cover adequately.
Therefore, donations will contribute toward the expenses of gas, food plus rent.
My family, Nick and I pray that Nick responds well to treatment so that he can fully recover, become strong and healthy and return to work and begin living a productive life. That's what we pray for. As Nick's mom, I pray and ask God to heal Nick and that he responds well to treatment and to keep him cancer free and that he lives out his life and fulfill his dreams.
Please pray with us. And please consider donating even a small amount. Just $5 from each and every friend and family member does more than what you can imagine.
Last time everyone pulled together for him and it truly helped to save his life. We are pulling together as a family as best we can but your help is truly needed.
$5 makes a difference because it pays for an entire day of food.
We hate to have to ask again, but Nicky is fighting and he needs you.
For this Christmas season, all we ask for is being hopeful and enjoying our holiday without worrying about things we had taken for granted in the past, such as what I mentioned above. All we ask for is that our car works and we have gas in it to get to radiation treatment and that we don't have the worry about money for basics...all while we only just should be praying for Nick's full recovery from the devastation the symptoms are causing.
Thank you God bless,
Here is part of the original post from Nick:
For the passed 3 years I have been recovering from cancer. That is putting it simply. However, it is not. The treatment for a large, malignant brain tumor involved two surgeries. After both surgeries, I was infected with meningitis for which I needed to carry a bag that facillitated IV antibiotics administered for a few months. This delayed cancer treatment for several months. Cancer treatment: radiation and chemotherapy followed, when meningitis was clear.
When all treatment was complete, MRIs showed No Evidence of Disease (NED) for three years. Of course, I was happy to be alive and grateful that I still am.
I began to live my life under the shadow of uncertainty that every MRI brought every 3 months. I began working as a special education teacher for a private school. I felt happy and grateful to begin my life again. When I had symptoms of headaches, nausea, dizziness, I believed hat they were due to after affects of radiation and chemo and they would be short-lived and would soon go away with time.
Instead, the symptoms persisted. It was a challenge, to say the least, to wake up each morning and work through extreme lethargy, sweats, dizziness, nausea. I made it to work in spite of this even while enduring these symptoms for 3 years. The dizziness, poor equilibrium, headaches, sweats, nausea, became increasingly worse and it got to the point that I could no longer work, and I had to leave my job.
My most recent MRI, was not clear as they had been for the three previous years. My oncologist was concerned due to a couple of spots at the back of my brain- in the Cerebellum and also in the Hipocampus on the right side near my eye. The radiation oncologists ordered a Spectroscopy MRI to determine if the spots are cancer or radiation damage, or an infection from a virus. This told me possible reasons for the symptoms I had been enduring. During the writing of this summary, I was waiting to know the results.
I have since found out that There are two or more malignant tumors.
At this point in time, my symptoms are so bad that I can't barely function. Vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, unbalanced equilibrium, sweating, etc, have worsened. I am relying on my mother to do everything for me. Two weeks ago my symptoms progressed to a point that I was not able to eat or have fluids for almost one week. This landed me in the hospital for three days. The doctors stabilized me with IV fluids and sent me home.
My MRI results were explained to me by my Oncologist.
They are as follows:
The Spectroscopy MRI determined that the spots are malignant tumors.
The Oncologist and the team said that Chemotherapy and Radiation is the next step.
The plans I wrote for myself, initially, before I knew the MRI results, have not changed. I decided to continue with my plans and goals that will allow me to become healthier and live a more productive life.
It has not been easy. However I do not want to continue to feel as badly as I had been feeling.
I am moving more. I'm paying attention to my mind and body, connecting both.
I plan to follow through with my original plans and goals.
However, first I need to undergo cancer treatments- Radiation and Chemotherapy.
I will need help with basics such as the following:
1. Food $250 monthly, minimum.
2. Gas for transportation to Radiation treatments, therapies, oncology appointments: $200 monthly minimum
3. Household Expenses: Utilities, Phone, Rent $700
My income has been drastically reduced because I am on sick leave without pay.
Creating this Everribbon, Nick's Fund site, asking friends and family for donations will help fulfill my goals. These goals are to undergo Radiation and Chemotherapy, then slowly begin my journey toward recovery and regain my health and become a productive man again.
Thank you for all of your support, prayers and donations.
I am humbly asking for your help.
Every dollar counts.
