On March 23, 2016, the U.S. Department of Interior will attempt to auction off 43 million acres of the Gulf waters as leases to the oil and gas industry. That same day, people from across the nation and globe will join with citizens of the Gulf Coast to demand an immediate suspension of oil lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and to #KeepItInTheGroud!
Additionally, we will put forward a vision for Gulf communities powered by solar and wind energy, a phase out of fossil fuels, and an immediate hiring of at least 1,000 workers to repair the 27,000 aging and abandoned oil wells in the region.
We acknowledge the particular burden borne by the Gulf of Mexico region regarding the global climate crisis. Should this auction proceed, the leases have the potential to become the 8th-largest source of carbon pollution on the planet.
As we encircle the Superdome we stand united in our solidarity with other communities and regions of the world who continue to suffer the destructive effects from drilling, mining, fracking, refining, climate disasters, and all other forms of extractive and fossil fuel industry induced devastation.
Your donation will be used to purchase art supplies, support pre- and post- event activities, and to provide scholarships for the travel and lodging expenses of Gulf Coast fence line, front line and environmental justice communities.
Thank you so much for your support!
