Daniel had epilepsy and I’m sure that the coroner will soon discover that he had a seizure while swimming which is what caused him to drown.
A recent article published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, states that people with epilepsy have a 15 to 19 times greater risk of drowning than do people in the general population. The article also states that this risk was highest in people who have both epilepsy and a learning disability. . During the time period, 75% of the seizures that occurred in Redwoods’ insured pools involved individuals who were over 18 years old.
Seizures during exercise are reported when overexertion, hypothermia (decrease in body temperature), dehydration, hypoventilation (breath holding), and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) are avoided, according to the Epilepsy Foundation.
This family can really use the help. Damian and Stephanie (Daniel's Mother) have 6 kids, 4 of them lived full time with them in their 2 ½ bedroom trailer in Phoenix. They area white family barely living above the poverty threshold. They cannot afford to bury their Son nor can the Mother afford to take time off work to properly grieve this enormous loss.
